Optimism and the Southern Oregon Real Estate Market

2009 will undoubtedly be remembered for the global economic meltdown, financial crisis, real estate collapse, and governmental bailouts. And as the Southern Oregon real estate market passes through this treacherous fiscal gauntlet, at times it becomes tough for homeowners, buyers, and sellers to hang on to a positive attitude. Yet recent studies show that the tougher the times, the more we need an optimistic attitude. Research now shows that a positive attitude not only leads to a longer life span, but to a healthier one as well. Perhaps it’s worth looking at the current Great Recession from an optimists point-of-view so that we may learn how recessions may actually help us all to live a little bit longer and a little bit healthier.
It turns out that during periods of economic uncertainty and downturn, people sleep more, eat and drink less, and are less accident prone. Not surprisingly, these behavioral changes result in a longer life span, so from an optimists point-of-view, recessions like the one we are experiencing in the Southern Oregon real estate market may actually help us all to live a little bit longer. Researchers have also found that during the Great Depression, the overall health of Americans improved. People were actually healthier during periods of prosperity both before and after the Great Depression with mortality rates falling and life expectancy rising.
As buyers, sellers, builders, and bankers in the Southern Oregon real estate market will attest, keeping a positive attitude when dealing with impending foreclosures, short sales, and loss of equity is an extremely difficult task. Still, it always helps to take a deep breath, reflect on the positives in your life, recognize good fortune though it may be disguised as difficulty, and give thanks for the love and blessings in your life. In short, keep a positive optimistic attitude and you’ll live longer in the process.
